As the Chairman of the Quantitative Finance Alumni Group, Ray has gone out of his way to guide and help his juniors in QF such as myself. I first approached Ray after he posted a job opening that I was keen to apply for. Shortly after, he took time out of his busy schedule to chat with me to find out about my background, strengths and weaknesses as well as short term and long term goals for myself as a mid-career switch. With little relevant experience for the role, my chances of landing an interview with the hiring manager were close to zero. And despite knowing that, he offered to put in a good word to the hiring manager on my behalf, focusing on the relevant skills that I have gathered over the years and key qualities that I possess that are suited for the job. From then on, Ray kept me posted on possible roles that suit my profile, each time ensuring that I gained a deeper understanding of what the role entails by sharing his insights after having worked in the finance industry for so many years. As a family-oriented individual, Ray also made sure to share with me the practical aspects of the roles that he was recommending such as long working hours, possible night shifts as well as frequency of having to travel to name a few. His willingness to help those he can and his readiness to share his expertise and knowledge are admirable and worthy of praise.
